The Johnstons, or Johnstones, dutifully patrolled the borderlands between Scotland and England for over 600 years. Johnston cattle thieves would frequently cross the border to steal cows (no small feat), hiding them back on their side in a hollow affectionately known as “The Devil’s Beef Tub.”
